There is a longer story about the Truth Series pieces, please find it below if you are interested. If you prefer shorter descriptions more limited to aesthetics, read here: Truth Series 1 (Skies) draws inspiration from Chinese ink painting and scrolls. Subtle blues, greens and ink washes give this piece a landscape feel.

Longer Story:

My most demanding year of schooling brought with it a near breakdown. It was difficult to know what to make for dinner or even how to just be in between all of the doing. Instead of making art about what I was studying and researching- war- I decided that I needed to make something simpler. Something process driven. I knew I could go and work on a composition, knew I could just make something balanced, without all of the other factors involved. Of course, I was still thinking about the international conflicts, both historical and contemporary, that I was reading and talking about constantly.

Truth began to be a slippery concept. While I was on the floor, pouring and painting and walking around the large pieces I was making, I was almost distractingly aware that I was making only one version of truth. That each layer I put down- whether it was paint or pencil, was its own snapshot of a moment, of a truth. As I progressed in my studies and paintings, I saw that there is no objective truth, there is only what has happened to individuals. What I see in the work, what I think is there and what I felt when I made it, is utterly different than what any other viewer will experience, and it will be no less true.
